Seacoast Guest Cabins, Haiti 1972 While I was in college in Chicago, my "art patron" David Mauzy, who had rich and famous friends all over the world, asked me to design tourist cabins for coastal land in Haiti owned by a friend of his. I scoured the University library for references on tropical architecture and building practices and the climate and resources of Haiti. I designed pyramids with the utilities in the back wall, against a slope, and the other three walls consisting of broad wooden louvers or slats which could be opened to the sea breezes and the view, while still keeping the interior in shade. There was a sleeping loft, and the ground floor was one big room. Shortly after I finished the drawings and mailed them off, I heard from David that his friend had gone out to watch the sunset behind his house in Carmel, and had fallen off the cliff to his death. |
