Sun Moon Mountains Rocks: An Introduction to Korean Art of the Choson Dynasty

1996

I was hired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to design a CD-ROM about Korean art. I knew nothing about Korea, so I spent days at the Korean Cultural Center library and watched many hours of videos. I developed a stack of storyboards about two feet high, creating dozens of innovative interactive sequences to immerse people in 2,000 years of this charismatic culture. The designs were based on my own experiments with Macromedia Director, so I knew they could be produced.

But when the Museum started talking to production companies and getting bids, it became obvious they would have to scale it back radically. They cut out almost all of the interactivity and limited the art to the Choson period.

Something less than 5 percent of what I designed was produced, and most of it is just a slide show, but they were able to include a few of my interactive elements. And the art is wonderful.
