Posters for Terra Incognita

1981-1995

The street poster phenomenon was huge in San Francisco in the early punk days, and people would really come to a show if they liked the poster, whether they knew you or not.

I had a whole kit with wallpaper paste, staplegun, and tape that I carried for every contingency, and it was common to stay up all night postering before the show. Considering how many hundreds of posters we put up for each show, I'm sure many thousands of people have seen my posters on the streets over the years, as compared to the much fewer who have seen my other art work.

Computer graphics did not exist back then for us peons, so all these posters were laid out, pasted up, and lettered by hand.

The "NOMA" poster at upper right incorporates an aerial view of agricultural land under center pivot irrigation, common in the arid intermountain west.
