Context & Inspiration

"Pictures of Knowledge" reflect an organic evolution of my academic training in the modeling and analysis of dynamic systems, my visual-art practice in pictography and symbolic communication, my study of indigenous rock art, and my professional practice of information architecture. They represent my contribution to ancient and global traditions which include Navajo sand paintings, Huichol fabric art, Medieval European cosmograms, and Tibetan mandalas.

I started making them in an attempt to integrate my dauntingly diverse in-depth pursuits as a visual artist, a scholar of linguistic philosophy, a music-maker (singer, songwriter, and musician), a practioner of the science of dynamics, a student of natural history, a writer and storyteller, a student of aboriginal living skills, a designer of interactive computer interfaces, and an organizer and facilitator of interdisciplinary teams.

However, a deeper goal was to better understand my role in nature and within my human community, given that much of my work had focused on connecting people with nature. And I was also attempting to understand the numerous memorable, allegorical or symbolic dreams and visions which had come to me throughout life since childhood, some of which suggested insights into philosophical or "spiritual" issues.
