Wickiups

1990-1991

I got a rigorous course in wickiup construction at the Boulder Outdoor Survival School in Utah. The wickiup is the native shelter of the Southern Paiute homelands. The idea is to make a windtight shelter with the materials in your immediate environment, be they tree limbs, bark, brush, or salvage materials. You can build it to shed rain if you need to.

The simple design is amazingly stable in high winds, easy to heat with an inside campfire, and easy to maintain from year to year. I built one in the desert that resisted the elements for years, until some yahoo came along and threw a railroad tie at it.
