joan enjoying shade in the desert

Yatampi

1991

Before I built a wickiup on our property, we had no shade. My Mom wanted to visit the place in the summertime. We could expect high winds at any time, enough to blow down a tent or any of the commercially available shade tents or gazebos. What was I to do?

My desert friend Philippe suggested I make some kind of space frame using PVC pipe. I found a light canvas tarp and did some drawings. This was the simplest design I could come up with using off-the-shelf materials. Like the creosote bush, which the Indians call yatampi, it gently but firmly adjusts its shape to even the highest winds, maintaining its function.
