Music & Prophecy

1982

In early 1982 the Terra Incognita loft hosted a birthday party which turned into the biggest and most exciting jam session I've ever experienced. All the luminaries of the Bay Area African music scene were there, many of them meeting for the first time. The music went on all night.

Afterwards Jon and I decided to create a series of public events at TI that would bring these people back regularly, adding art, food, film, storytelling, and whatever our community could conceive. We called this "Music & Prophecy", and it lasted from winter through summer that year, roughly on a monthly basis. We put prodigious amounts of time into planning and organizing these shows, and barely broke even with our expenses.

In addition to the cross-cultural jams, some highlights were the reading of Isabel Eberhart's stories by Patricia Butler, showings of films by Craig Baldwin, jugglers throwing flaming brands the length of a hall lined with black plastic, and getting shut down by the police shortly before a huge crowd arrived outside.
