Performance Art

1981

During the summer of 1981 we organized several public performances. The most ambitious took place in the Financial District of San Francisco throughout the lunch hour, when office workers take to the streets. We planned it for weeks and rehearsed onsite late at night when the area was empty.

We mapped a route and designed both site-specific and traveling routines, from chants and synchronized choreography to storytelling, to disrupt peoples' "dronelike" habits and remind them of the rich context around them. We were all in office-worker disguise so we could infiltrate crowds and surprise them. The event was exhilarating from the beginning to its end, in a maypole dance in the plaza of the city's tallest building.
