Context & Inspiration 1981-1991 Terra Incognita began in the do-it-yourself spirit of "let's build a stage in the barn". We organized and created public events in San Francisco for years with no outside funding or affiliation, postering the streets ourselves and producing videos and books to document our events. Jon Spayde was my main partner in this. At the beginning, we conceived public performances with our band, then we pursued an ambitious multi-media cabaret series. In the process, the Terra Incognita loft became a grass-roots arts organization with a large informal constituency, and the ultimate fruit of our ideas was the Pow-Wows. Throughout, we remained committed to building a friendly, supportive community and making a culture that could celebrate diversity. |
