Context & Inspiration

To 1970

My earliest memories of events are the Williamson family reunions in the foothills of the Appalachians, where there was food, storytelling, games, and music. In grade school, I had the Snake Club, which pursued local "scientific" expeditions and defended our turf. In high school, Sigma Pi Chi (the Society of Psychohistory) perpetrated all sorts of events combining experimental theater, comedy, and games.

Then, in my senior year, I began working with John, Mark, and Beau in the band Wet Fur, and we somehow became a performance art group, long before we ever heard the expression. We were so culturally isolated, I'm not even sure what inspired us, but we were definitely encouraged by art teacher Mel Gray, our friend and frequent host.

We put on shows anywhere and everywhere in our backward, rural county, from churches to sidewalks to craft festivals, setting up stepladders and sitting on top of them while we performed. Between songs we would do crazy things like spreading a blanket on the ground and painting on it. We made a bunch of surrealistic super-8 films, and we wrote an "opera" called Penis Envy.
