Max Carmichael was the founder and creative director of the San Francisco band and underground arts collaborative Terra Incognita. Terra Incognita's recording of 'Rank Stranger' was recognized by the Village Voice and Los Angeles Times as the standout selection on the seminal alt-folk album 'Potatoes', and is considered an inspiration for the alt-country movement of the 90s. Max is also a musicologist whose large and ever-growing repertoire of original and stylistically unique compositions is informed by genres ranging from lounge and electronica to punk and post-punk, from Appalachian and Celtic to West African, from noise to Native American. His musical collaborators have included DJ Cheb i Sabbah, fellow bandleaders Yasir Chadly of Morocco and OJ Ekemode of Nigeria, Norman Salant and Benjamin Bossi of Microscopic Septet, performance artist Pamela Z and author Jon Spayde. Here for your enjoyment is a small but representative sample of past recordings, ranging from studio mixes to rough takes and field recordings. |
