Last Exit on the Road to Ruin

I don't like this modern food;
City people are so rude;
I guess I could just move along,
But everywhere I go there's somethin' wrong.

I'm just a boy from Indiana,
Don't wanna hear about California.
I should've stayed in Indiana;
I should've stayed in bed.

In the summer with no covers on,
It's so quiet with the sirens gone.
I don't even want the radio on,
Just me and my girl.

But I can't go back, I can't go back;
I'm drivin' down a one-way track;
Waiting for the big attack
When all the TV sets go black.

I remember Sunday drives,
The farmers out there with their wives;
We never called it Paradise -
We always thought it was so boring.

In my car with no seat belts on,
Drivin' down the Road to Ruin,
See the taillights of the cars ahead -
Nobody knows what's up ahead -

See the headlights on the Exit sign -
Too many lanes to change in time -

Last exit on the Road to Ruin
Last exit on the Road to Ruin
Last exit on the Road to Ruin
Last exit on the Road to Ruin
Punk Songs

1979-1980

My punk songs were mostly written during my first year in San Francisco, at the height of the punk explosion in the U.S. I wrote 50 or 60 songs in that year, ranging from angry protest songs and "power pop" to existential poetry.

"Last Exit" is a favorite of our friends back in Indiana, and tapes of it have circulated widely for years. I've heard a version recorded by a band in Chicago. I've never made a cent off a song, but for all I know there are kids out there making money off mine!

Date With Destiny

Though the dawn
Seems as far away as Mercury or Mars,
And the armies of the night obscure the stars,
Don't despair -
'Til somebody cares,
You've got to carry on.

And though they say
You're just a paranoid in paradise,
You're just afraid to get bitten by that gift horse twice,
They've got your number,
You'd better change it,
To keep those rude boys away.

You're an outcast child,
You're nobody's idea of fun,
And that's how I know
You'll be the one.

I've got my course set for you,
Across this dark and stormy sea,
'Cause baby you and me,
Girl we got a date with destiny.
