Singing

In my family, the point was not that there were singers, but that everybody sang for their health and well-being. Grandma was a soloist in the Plum Creek Church, and Mamaw sang those old hymns so loud I was embarrassed. I loved Uncle Wib's voice at family reunions. Dad could scat like crazy.

John Guffin, Mark Norris, and I toured the country on the trains in the 70's, singing depression-era songs for small crowds in the grand old railway stations.

I've tried hard to make my voice do various things well, but in the final analysis, I don't care much about virtuosity. I know that the foundation of all music is family and community and everybody singing and dancing together, as part of normal healthy life.
