camp meeting, 19th century america

Context & Inspiration

On Sunday, the extended family would gather at the home place for a hymn sing. Afterwards, the young adults would play and sing secular "country" tunes.

On occasion, the camp meeting brought the whole countryside together to witness, sing, eat, and socialize.

People would walk miles through the hills on Saturday night to attend a square dance. Community dances could be celebratory, competitive, ceremonial - any excuse was a good one.

People used to sing while they worked together, out in the fields, or building a house. At the Terra Incognita loft, we used to have housekeeping dances with brooms and mops, and cooking dances with pots and spoons.
