Conceptual Art

1979-1981

At CalArts, I was hanging out with the bohemian painters and filmmakers. But the faculty was still dominated by conceptual artists from the 70's. The primary goal of conceptual art is to make you think, but some people had taken this to ridiculous extremes.

With my recent background in philosophy and science, I had to try my hand. "Taking Responsibility for Art" was a connect-the-dots piece. The idea was that I was taking responsibility for the agonizing "art" process, leaving the audience to enjoy the "craft" experience of connecting the dots. The subject was the Marlboro Man on his horse. The piece was a big hit and another signpost in the legacy of "phantom art student" Max Klein.
