Canvas Arrays

1981-1984

These works were made during the most traumatic, emotional, purely bohemian period of my life. I had a majestic, decaying studio surrounded by filthy tenements. Everyone around me was insane, going insane, or trying to keep from going insane. I was your classic suffering artist.

I made about a dozen of these canvas arrays. They were all made to span, or fill up, a big wall, like the walls of our loft. Everybody in our community saw them at one time or another. In the process, I learned that I could use images as terms in a visual grammar.
