Didactyl Brothers 1979-1981 These pictures seem to speak for themselves. But Mark and I, going by the names Daryl and Dartaigne Didactyl, were actually inspired by another notorious guerilla art team of the period. And not all of our work involved big boners, although a surprising proportion did. Our work was uniformly topical, an irreverant response to current events. Our first show memorialized the Space Shuttle launch. The show represented here was a tribute to the Los Angeles Olympics. The life-size drawings went up in the CalArts Main Gallery the night before a scheduled tour of Girl Scouts. The dean offered to buy some drawings if we would allow him to take down the show. Daryl tells me that the president of CalArts at the time, Robert Fitzpatrick, was maneuvering to get an appointment as the Olympic Arts coordinator, but it was top-secret art-world politics. The coincidence of our show led him and his staff to believe there was a leak in their circle, which provided additional incentive for our "payoff". |
