Context & Inspiration 1970-1980 At the University of Chicago, I studied anatomy and life drawing at Midway Studios under Harold Hayden, art critic for the Chicago Tribune. I also took courses in classical printmaking, sculpture, and painting. I applied to some east-coast art schools and was accepted, but after a summer of unsuccessfully groveling for work in Chicago, I decided to pursue a "day job" career in engineering to support my art compulsion. My drawing and painting continued full-bore throughout engineering school. I was pretty "square", with no interest in contemporary art. I loved the abstract expressionist canvases of Hans Hofmann from the fifties and sixties, the paintings of Whistler and Delacroix, and the monumental sculptures of Alexander Sterling Calder. |
