Context & Inspiration

1979-1981

When Mark Norris entered California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), I joined him for a year, as a "student at large", living on a ledge above his painting studio. Mark and others helped me become a mythical figure, under the pseudonym "Max Klein". It was my first immersion in the contemporary world of high art, as the conceptual artists of the 70's gave way to the neo-expressionists of the 80's. There was a lot of ambition bottled up, and we partied with kids who became international art stars within a few years.

Back in San Francisco, where the punk scene was booming, inspiring a corresponding "do-it-yourself" movement among underemployed bohemian artists, I joined the underground community, making and showing raw pictures and subversive installations and helping organize group shows.
