Pictography

1985-present

As I was working on serial drawings, people responded more and more to their symbolic value. Getting into native rock art, I became aware that I was heading in a direction where symbolism was more important than rendering, and the artifact would cease to be the main focus. The dialog, the social experience, would become everything. My next challenge was to reduce the pictures to pictograms.

The hundreds of pastel drawings I've made since 1985 are inspired by experiences in the desert, and dreams and visions about it. They've been seen by more people than any of my other visual art.

After I began studying native rock art in the field, my work slowed as I tried to understand how visual symbolism can function in a society immersed in nature.
