Context & Inspiration 1996-present In the Nigerian market town of Onitsha, a unique form of literature appeared decades ago. It's a direct adaptation of village storytelling to the printed medium. The authors work in market stalls, printing their own pamphlets, which are displayed on the outside of the stall for sale. The readers buy them directly from the author in the same place where they get their food, returning later to discuss the stories, and the authors' subsequent printings reflect these discussions in an evolution of the characters, themes, and styles. It's impossible for an author to be self-indulgent, and it's impossible for a reader to escape into a private fantasy. In fact, the substance of these books is invariably social and moral. They're vastly entertaining parables reminding people of shared ethical and social values. |
