Harvest 2007: Honoring Food Providers Among our basic necessities, food alone is both necessary and sufficient to sustain us. Food, not oil, is our primary source of energy, and our participation in the food webs and cycles is our primary bond with our habitat and our natural community. Here in southwestern New Mexico, we honor our local food providers at the annual Mimbres Valley Harvest Festival. This year's festival was a great success, demonstrating the potential for a thriving rural community. Check out the great photo gallery at our web site, www.mimbresharvestfest.com. As the harvest is gathered and the seasons turn, we honor those who provide food for our bodies, our communities, and our future. In today's supermarket culture we have lost sight of the fact that at a fundamental level, the gathering of food has always been at the foundation of humankind.... Collective cooperation in food gathering lies at the source of social interaction, language, and community.... David Avraham Voluck in The Book of the Tongass, ed.
